Type: Lightweight facade panels, renovation
Green facade surface: 45 m²

Project description:
In this project, solar panels were installed on the south-facing facade of the building. However, the lower 15 panels were partially affected by shading, reducing their effectiveness. At the same time, the architect, OMA (Office for Metropolitan Architecture), wanted the project to contribute positively to the surrounding urban environment.

To address both aspects, lightweight hanging facade panels were installed in the lower section instead of additional solar panels. These panels were designed as green facade elements using Mosscrete, Respyre’s bioreceptive concrete technology that enables moss to grow directly on facade surfaces.

Behind these panels, integrated nesting boxes were incorporated to create habitat opportunities for birds and other small urban wildlife. By combining bioreceptive facade materials with nesting infrastructure, the design supports urban biodiversity while making productive use of facade areas that are less suitable for energy generation.

The Mosscrete panels create the right conditions for moss establishment on vertical surfaces, allowing the facade to gradually develop into a living green layer. Once established, the moss requires minimal maintenance and contributes to a more nature-inclusive built environment.
