Infrastructure, Utrecht
Type: Plastering, renovation, retaining wall
Green facade surface: 135 m²

Project description:
The retaining walls of the Rabobank building in Utrecht were frequently affected by graffiti, creating an ongoing maintenance challenge for the area. To address this issue in a sustainable and long lasting way, the Utrecht Entrepreneurs Fund initiated a forward thinking solution that combines functionality with environmental impact.

Instead of relying on repeated cleaning or temporary coatings, the walls were renovated using bioreceptive concrete, a material specifically designed to support natural plant growth. This innovative approach transforms the previously bare and vandalized surfaces into living green facades.

By actively encouraging vegetation to develop across the 135 square meters of wall surface, the project not only reduces the likelihood of graffiti reoccurring but also enhances the visual quality of the urban environment. In addition, the green facade contributes to improved local biodiversity by creating habitats for plants, insects, and other small organisms.

The result is a durable and aesthetically pleasing solution that integrates sustainability, urban design, and practical maintenance into one cohesive project.
